The Ultimate Guide To Become A Content Writer In India

In this article, I will share with you some tips by using which you can become a content writer in India. There is a notion that it is difficult to become a content writer, and more difficult to earn money from it. And most of the Indians thinks in this way.

However, this is not the case. It is a booming category and with the increase of many businesses, there is an increase in demand for content writers. So if you want to earn money with what you love, then don’t forget to read this article till the end.

The First Step to Become A Content Writer In India

The first step is pretty straightforward. And if you are naive, it is very important that you follow this. Many people fail in getting content writing jobs because they don’t have the skillset. So it is necessary to develop the skills, and only then you should look for a job, whether it is full time or part-time, or if you want to do it as a freelancer.

In this age of the internet, learning was never been this easy. You don’t need to go to a physical class to learn content writing. There are thousands of courses available on the internet. If you don’t want to pay money to learn this skill, then use YouTube where you can learn content writing for free.

However, I will suggest enrolling on a course as you will get a certificate that will work as proof that you’ve taken a course and know about writing. If the budget is low then go into udemy, there you’ll get thousands of courses in different topics. Most importantly they are very economical.

Udemy sometimes run sales, where they offer a full-fledge high-quality course with a certificate for as low as five hundred rupees!

The Second Step To Become A Content Writer In India

Now the second step is to gather the tools that will help you to write. Presently as a content writer, I use two tools. One is called Grammarly and the second is Google Docs. Grammarly is a freemium tool and Google Docs is free.

What is the meaning of freemium?

It is the collective name we gave to those things that have a paid subscription available but also offer a free version with limited features.

There are other Grammarly alternatives like Prowritingaid, Ginger, Language Tool etc. You can also use a website called HemingwayApp, which we use not to check grammar but how well the content is written.

Also, you need a note-taking app that is reliable and you can access it through both mobile and desktop. My favourite one is Google notes, as it is free, reliable, simple to use and has the cross-platform ability. I use Google notes to take notes during my research.

The Third Step To Become A Content Writer In India

Now as you have the knowledge and the tool, it’s time to decide the platform and the method you’ll earn through content writing. There are three popular ways; doing a full-time job, having a Partime job, or become a freelance content writer.

Now at first, this thing may not be clear in your head. You may be confused about which method you should choose to earn money as a content writer. In this case, I will suggest you try all of them and see which fits you.

You can also try doing an internship to get some experience, as experienced writers get more preference in comparison to those who are un experience. And as internships are one of the best ways to gain, well, experience, I will suggest doing it.

There is another way you can make money by becoming a content writer, and that is doing it for yourself, I mean having a blog. You may be wondering why I didn’t include it in those three popular ways? Because you can choose to have your own blog and can write for it in spite of having a Part-Time/full-time job or doing freelancing.

When it starts to grow then you can do it on a full-time basis. And having your own blog can give you freedom, you’ll be the boss. There are many ways one can earn money through a blog.

Freelancing Sites For Indian Content Writers

There are many freelancing sites where you can create a profile and earn money. But some of the most popular ones are, Fiverr, Upwork, Freelancer PeoplePerHour etc. However, you’ll face lots of competition as a new writer, as there is huge competition in this niche, So don’t expect to get clients instantly, it may take a month till you land your first freelancing gig.

Also, they take a charge a commission for every penny you make. As you are using their platform. So also keep this thing in mind, before going for the freelancing sites.

If you don’t want to use these platforms, then there are hundreds of Facebook groups where you can see thousands of job postings! Go to your Facebook account and then to your search bar. Then search the term content writing or freelancing. Filter out groups and you’ll see job opportunities.

Things To Keep In Mind To Become A Content Writer In India

Now as I shared the Three Steps To become a content writer in India, let’s see some things that you should keep in mind.

Take The Money Before Hand

If you are using a site like Fiverr or Upwork, then your payment is safer. But when doing freelancing through sites like Facebook, I cannot say the same thing.

That’s why I will suggest you take some of the amounts beforehand. I mean get into some kind of agreement, as you’ll first give them one-third of the work, and they will pay you one-third of the money. Then you’ll deliver one-third of the writing and they will give you one-third of the money. And then you’ll deliver the rest of the article, and they will pay you the rest of the amount.

In this way, it is much safer, and if the person doesn’t pay the rest of the amount, you at least have more than half of the payment. So always use this technique to get the payment.

Have A Portfolio

You are an experienced content writer who has done several projects and completed them successfully.  But there is no proof. Then what do you think why people will believe that you are what you are claiming to be?

This is where a Portfolio came in handy. I will suggest you create an account in Linkedin, and in the work experience section mentioned your, well, work experience

What is LinkedIn? In simple words, it is social media for professionals. You can not only have proof of work, but you can also build a connection with the people who are working in the same field. You can get job opportunities, and upon buying their premium subscription, you can also access thousands of courses offering certificates.

Another thing I will suggest you do is creating your own blog and write in-depth articles. When someone asks about your work samples, then you can share your website’s link. It will not only be convenient for your reader to check your talent, but also they can assess your SEO skills if the article is ranking on google.

And do you know what is the best thing? You can do both! I mean create an article in your blog and share some part of it on LinkedIn. They provide you with an option to write articles so why not using it. When your employer will check your profile, they can see the proof of work.

So, these are some of the steps to use to become a content writer in India. I hope you liked it and got some knowledge. If you did, then don’t forget to share it with your friends and family.

Thank You 🙂
